In Situ Stabilization of Persistent Organic Contaminants in Marine Sediments

چکیده
Microprobe two-step laser desorption/laser ionization mass spectrometry (μLMS) is used as a new analytical technique for the detection of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Three standard Aroclor solutions (Aroclor 1232, 1242, and 1262) and three samples of activated carbon spiked with Aroclor 1242 are examined. All the PCBs present in the Aroclor solutions are clearly identified using μLMS. The distribution of the peaks follows the relative natural abundances of the carbon and chlorine isotopes. μLMS analyses of the spiked particles of activated carbon reveal the presence of PCBs and an abundance of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The detection limit for PCBs on solid surfaces is determined to be between 1 and 10 ppm. Because the spatial resolution of the μLMS instrument varies between 10 and 40 microns, PCB information at the subparticle scale can be obtained.

Study of the rate of organic oil pollutants (PAHS) and heavy metals (V, Ni, Hg) in the four regions, Siri, Lavan, Khark and Bahregan in the Persian Gulf
Pollution of marine waters is one of the important issues that has a irreparable effects. Also, in the organic oil pollutants, due to inappropriate effects on the environment and humans health and ability to create cancer, hydro carbons of polycyclic (PAHS) and heavy metals (Ni,Hg,V) have a particular importance. According to the importance of study of the environ mental contaminants in the fou...
متن کاملDistribution of DDT and other persistent organic contaminants in Canyons and on the continental shelf off the central California coast.
Sediment samples were collected to delineate the distribution of contaminants along the central California coast. Sampling included a variety of Canyons and shelf/slope areas to evaluate contaminant transport patterns and potential delivery to Canyons and the continental slope to a depth of 1200 m. Sediments were collected and analyzed for organic contaminants using standard techniques of the N...
متن کاملOccurrence and Concentrations of Persistent Personal Care Products, Organic UV Filters, in the Marine Environment
The benzotrialzol organic UV filters, such as UV-320 (CAS# 384671-7), UV-326 (CAS# 3896-11-5), UV-327 (CAS# 3864-99-1), and UV-328 (CAS# 25973-55-1), were detected in marine organisms collected from the Ariake Sea, western Japan. The high concentrations of UV filters were found in oysters and tidal flat species, at the concentrations of several ten ng/g (wet wt. basis). It is interesting to kno...
متن کاملPolycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Plants of Shadegan Wetland: Halocnemum strobilaceum and Suaeda maritima
Plants are known to bioaccumulate many contaminants. Petroleum-derived compounds, such as saturated hydrocarbons and PAHs are widespread persistent environmental contaminants. Deposition of soot and precipitation of black rain have occurred in the Shadegan Wetland. In this study, PAHs in plant parts of two prominent species of halophytes, Halocnemum strobilaceum and Suaeda maritima were determi...
متن کاملUnderstanding Biogeochemical Cycling of Trace Elements and Heavy Metals in Estuarine Ecosystems
Nature has slow occurring biogeochemical cycles of trace elements and heavy metals and the cycles have significantly controlled environmental fates of these elements. The trace elements and heavy metals cannot be degraded like organic pollutants and they may transform and become stable and persistent contaminants that accumulate in soil and sediments [1–3]. Estuaries play an important role in h...
